Though the root, leaves and fruit of this plant have been helping people treat diseases for centuries, it is only recently that scientists have discovered how Morinda Citrifolia works. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s Dr. R. M. Heinicke worked to identify the active ingredient in Morinda Citrifolia which causes it to have such a multitude of healing effects. He found an alkaloid in Morinda which he named Xeronine. although Morinda Citrifolia is low in Xeronine, it contains ample amounts of the precursor pro-xeronine. He also found that Morinda Citrifolia contained the enzyme which activated pro-xeronine to help produce Xeronine.

Xeronine works to regulate the rigidity and shape of specific proteins, all of which work with cells in different functions.
